Biographical Narrative
San Francisco based artist Kirsten Stolle was born in Newton, MA and received her BA from Framingham State College in 1989. She also completed studies at Kensington College, London, England and Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. Stolle’s work is included in the permanent collection of the San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; Crocker Museum of Art, Sacramento, CA and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN as well several corporate collections.
In 2009, Stolle was awarded the highly competitive San Francisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Grant for Individual Artists. The grant was used to support the development of her project "Anatomy of a Future Forest", a visual arts and educational project that explores future ecological scenarios within the context of global warming and other environmental impacts. The project culminated in her third solo exhibition at Dolby Chadwick Gallery in March 2010.
In 2008, Stolle’s mixed media paintings were featured in “Evolutionary Soup”, her second solo exhibition at Dolby Chadwick Gallery, San Francisco, CA. A corresponding exhibition catalog with a curatorial essay written by Diana Daniels, Assistant Curator, Crocker Museum of Art critically examined the work. Additional select solo exhibitions include Julie Nester Gallery, Park City, UT; Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, NYC; Butters Gallery, Portland, OR; and Trillium Press, Brisbane, CA. Stolle has also been included in New American Paintings (2009 and 2005) and Eleven Eleven Journal of Literature and Art (2008). Recent residencies include the Ucross Foundation for the Arts, Clearmont, WY; The Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, NY; Blue Mountain Center, Blue Mountain, NY; Anderson Center for the Arts, Red Wing, MN; Oregon College of Arts and Crafts, Portland, OR; Spiro Arts Center, Park City, UT; and The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, Ireland.
